Carl Gates

Carl Harold (Pat or Carl, Jr.) Gates was born in Windom, MN, on April 10, 1926, and passed away on March 27, 2021. He was preceded in death by parents, Carl Emerson Gates and Kathryn Mina (Van Norman) Gates Weber and 7 siblings. Carl most recently lost his wife of 44 years, Marilyn Lee (Sabo) Gates, on Sept. 19, 2020. He is survived by sons, Tim Gates (Debbie) and Tom and Brenda Gates; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Carl grew up in Heron Lake, MN and after his high school graduation he joined the US Navy.

Upon return, he earned his master’s degree in teaching from Mankato State. He married Joyce Ysker in 1948 and they moved to Anoka, MN, where he accepted a teaching position and went on to become a principal. Carl and Joyce had 2 sons together, however the marriage ended in divorce. Carl then married Marilyn on July 23, 1976, and they lived in Brooklyn Center, MN. After retirement they moved to Pequot Lakes, MN. They had many friends in the Brainerd Lakes area.

Carl is finally at peace and no longer suffering from his many health issues. Thank you to all the staff for his care at Bethany Good Samaritan in Brainerd, MN. Private family interment for Carl and Marilyn will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on May 3, 2021 at 1:30 PM. Please contact the family for attending due to Covid19 attendee restrictions.
