Carolyn Johnson

Carolyn M. Johnson (Eklund), age 83, passed away Monday, September 18, 2023. Carolyn was born May 4, 1940, to Vernon and Eunice Eklund in Kenmare, North Dakota. She had fond memories of going to the farm, family music, and reading. Carolyn married Curtis Johnson on March 9, 1959. Together, they moved to Breezy Point, MN in 1974 to raise their two sons and enjoy "lake life".  Carolyn and her business partners, Vern and Bess Dowty, purchased the Jack Pine Center in Pequot Lakes, MN, in 1987 and within it, opened a gift shop, restaurant and ice cream parlor. She later went into business with her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Mindy, opening MarketPlace in 1998. As a business owner in Pequot Lakes for 25 years, she would often be found scooping ice cream or ringing up gifts for customers. She loved the busy days at the shop, spending time with her seven grandchildren, her many books, pelicans, and her view of Pelican Lake.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; and parents, Vernon and Eunice. She leaves behind her oldest son, Curt Johnson of Pequot Lakes, and his daughters Emily (Cam), Sydney (Jay), and Lyndsey and son Wesley and their mother, Caryn Johnson; and youngest son, Tom (Mindy) Johnson of Breezy Point and their daughters, Courtney (Kevin), Carissa (Dan), and son Riley. Carolyn is also survived by her sister, Jackie (Leon) Kinnunen; brother, Terry (Karyn) Eklund; lifelong friend, Bess Dowty; along with several nieces, nephews, and other family. Carolyn adored her 8 great-grandchildren and her many grand pups.

Please join us in celebrating Carolyn's life on September 30, 2023 at Kline Funeral Home in Pequot Lakes.  A visitation will begin at 11:00 am with a service to follow at 1:00 pm.
