Leroy Aker

1937 - 2021

Leroy George Aker, age 83, of Alexandria, passed away Thursday, July 29 in Backus, MN. He was born to Alvin and Jennie Aker on December 7, 1937, in St. Cloud, MN. Leroy was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in McKinley Township. He graduated from Backus High School in 1956. He was married to the love of his life, Sharen (Martin) on July 9, 1960. They shared their life together for 61 years. Leroy’s career as a lineman started with Martin Engineering. He finished his distinguished 43-year career as a lineman with Ottertail Power Company.

Beyond the love for his family, the two things Leroy enjoyed the most were spending time at the farm where he grew up and serving those around him. While at the farm, Leroy enjoyed the camaraderie of the farm life: finding any reason to drive and work on his many tractors, supervising work in the farm yard, and driving trails through the property on his ATV. His most cherished moments were preparing for deer hunting and spending time with family reminiscing about deer camp stories of old.

Leroy found fulfillment interacting and guiding all ages. As a Boy Scout leader and mentor for several years, he received the highest recognition in the organization. He enjoyed his time as a 4H leader and as the President of Sons of Norway. He was also a respected member of the church council and the school board. For those that got to spend an extended time with Leroy, he left a lasting impression.

Leroy is survived by his wife, Sharen; children: Michael Aker (Molly), Leighan Monson (Nate), Lisa McIntyre, Matt Aker (Kerry), Mitchell Aker; brothers, Rod Aker (LaRene), Pete Peterson; sister Janice Crimmins. He loved and enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren: David Monson (Liz), Andrew Monson (Melissa), Duncan McIntyre, Abigail Aker, Mariah Aker, Ian McIntyre, Emily Aker, McKenna Aker, Olivia Aker, Camden Aker and great grandchild, Owen Monson.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Jennie Aker, and his brother, Kenneth Aker.

Leroy will be buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Backus, MN, on August 3 at 2:00 pm. A visitation will be held at Kline Funeral Home in Pine River, MN, prior to the burial from 12:00-1:15 pm.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm in Alexandria, MN, on August 7 at Alexandria Covenant Church with a gathering of family and friends from 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the service.

I remember my father (John W. Clear)  speaking of Mr. Aker in high regard many times when I was a child.  Dad worked for George Martin and Martin Engineering for many years when I was growing up.  My sympathy to the family of Mr. Aker.

Dearest Sharen - Diane has let us know today of Leroy's passing on this past Friday.  We are thinking of you at this time.  It was good to come to know both of you during the Texas winter and especially that you shared something of Leroy's "soul journey" with us.  We pray him the very deepest peace and for you rest and support from all your large family.  Please allow the river of grace to carry you now.  If it is feasible for all of us, we will very much look forward to seeing you this coming winter in Port A.  Pastors Karen and William Thompson
